LIMA Japan Global Licensing Committee Meetup on December 15th

Negotiating Contracts with Licensors and Licensing Agents
The next LIMA Japan Global Licensing Committee meeting will take place on Thursday 15th December to consider contract negotiation with licensors and licensing agents.

Using a scenario of a Japanese licensing company aiming to obtain merchandising rights from an overseas licensor or agent, participants will pool their thoughts and experiences to look at the negotiation process work flow, watching out for and avoiding pitfalls, dealing with differences between U.S., European and Asian rights holders, and understanding the distinctions between character and brand rights negotiations. We will also look at specific contractual issues that fall outside areas covered by standard agency boilerplates, and how to incorporate those circumstances into the contracts.

Japanese IP rights holders are also welcome to take part to give their views from a licensor’s standpoint.

Exhibiting or attending licensing trade shows? We also welcome participants from companies with rights negotiation experience who have or are planning to take part in overseas licensing exhibitions.

As reference, we encourage you to bring along any presentation materials you have used for rights negotiation (and are comfortable to share with the meeting participants).

The committee will meet on Thursday 15th December from 4.30 p.m to 6.30 p.m. at Basis Point Co-Working Space in Shimbashi, central Tokyo. Participation is by pre-registration to up to a maximum of 10 people, though we can accommodate more people if demand requires. The meeting is informal in nature with coffee, tea and soft drinks provided. For first timers, please briefly introduce yourself and your licensing experience as well as your company and its properties.

Please contact LIMA Japan Secretariat for details or assistance in English.

About LIMA Japan’s Global Licensing Committee:
LIMA Japan’s Global Licensing Committee regularly meets throughout the year to discuss issues, problems and best practices related to licensing in the international arena. Participation is open to any LIMA members active in licensing overseas and those considering developing business in global markets. To facilitate a focus on specific topics at each meeting, the committee has created a flow chart outlining the steps of the entire licensing negotiation process. The chart is regularly updated to reflect members’ interests and feedback from surveys. Meetings are usually conducted in Japanese though English-language speaking LIMA Japan members are welcome to participate. For more information, contact the LIMA Japan Secretariat
