About the Company

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) is the union for current professional basketball players in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Established in 1954, the NBPA’s mission is to ensure that the rights of NBA players are protected and that every conceivable measure is taken to assist players in maximizing their opportunities and achieving their goals, both on and off the court. Whether it is negotiating a collective bargaining agreement, prosecuting a grievance on a player’s behalf or counseling a player on benefits and educational opportunities, the NBPA advocates for the best interest of all NBA players.

The NBPA recently re-acquired its player group licensing rights. Consequently, the NBPA established National Basketball Players Incorporated (NBPI), a for-profit Licensing and Marketing business wholly owned by the NPBA and its members, the Players. This entity will work to maximize revenue, among other areas, through various commercial licensing including exploiting the player group licensing rights, marketing and sponsorship endeavors, content creation and distribution, and owned and operated events.

The NBPI Legal Department provides advice and counsel with respect to all of the company’s activities and businesses on a global basis. As an Associate Counsel, you will provide legal support to the General Counsel and the business clients generally on all legal matters. The position is based in New York, NY. No relocation package will be offered.

Job Description

The position will include drafting and negotiating agreements relating to trademark licensing, content creation and distribution (e.g., television and digital media licensing), events, technology partnerships, and advisory work in the area of corporate governance.

Job Requirements

Education: Undergraduate degree and Juris Doctor from a top-tier law school. Candidate must be a member of the New York Bar.

Required Experience & Knowledge:
• Minimum of 3 years of experience at a top law firm or similar in-house experience
• Experience in IP licensing, corporate governance, digital media, technology, sponsorship and/or sports marketing.
• Demonstrated ability to develop practical, business-minded solutions that support business strategy and key initiatives
• First-rate writing and oral presentation skills.
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time and in a dynamic, growth oriented environment.
