Job Description

To further promote the university and its former-student athletes, Ohio State is expanding its “Legends of the Scarlet & Gray” program. The Ohio State “Legends of the Scarlet & Gray” program strives to provide meaningful ways to stay engaged with and facilitate a platform for former student-athletes to receive compensation for use of their name and/or likeness with respect to potential commercial products and in personality-driven promotional activities in conjunction with Ohio State trademarks. These activities will allow the individual athlete to promote their personal brand and entrepreneurial efforts; enrich the tradition and heritage of the university; as well as create additional funding for the athlete and the university. The university’s Office of Affinity & Trademark Management stewards the Ohio State brand through protection and promotion to generate assets in support of the university’s mission, vision and values. The Director will coordinate with the Office of Affinity & Trademark Management and Trademark and Licensing Services in support of the university’s mission as well as oversee activities related to:

Job Requirements

Coordinating permissions and approvals from former student-athletes for use of their name and likeness on potential commercial products or activities

Identify, evaluate and facilitate potential promotional activities that utilize former student-athletes, including personal appearances, community events and speaking engagements

Identify, evaluate and facilitate potential merchandising opportunities that utilize former student-athletes, including apparel, collectables, toys and games.

Liaison with IMG, Ohio State’s multi-media athletic rights holder, in regards to opportunities for former student-athletes to engage with Ohio State Athletic sponsors

Liaison with the Ohio State letter winners organization, Varsity O
Attend relevant trade shows, conferences and industry events to identify new opportunities, potential strategic partnerships and licensees

Draft and publish business development plans, periodic updates, annual reports and presentations related to the Legends of the
Scarlet & Gray program

Provide an annual assessment of the program

Create collateral sales and marketing materials and tools in support of business development plans

Create annual expense budgets and revenue forecasts

Research licensing industry athlete-driven trends, and conduct due diligence research and analysis to evaluate potential licensing opportunities

Liaison with former student-athletes in regards to potential promotional or merchandising opportunities they may present to Ohio State

The position will report to the Assistant Vice President for Business Advancement, Affinity & Trademark Management. Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in sport industry, marketing or business and at least five years in sports marketing, licensing and/or player representation. Desired qualifications include a master’s degree in sport industry, marketing, business or law, or a combination of education and experience in the sports marketing/licensing industry. Applicant should be proficient in Excel and PowerPoint software applications.

The Ohio State University’s Office of Affinity & Trademark Management controls, protects and licenses the university’s name and identifying marks on commercial products and is responsible for the use of the Ohio State brand on products and services, university promotions and advertising, sponsorships, affinity programs and enforcement of the brand. Royalties derived from the commercial use of the university’s registered marks directly benefit the students at Ohio State by funding a variety of scholarships and programs.
