We are seeking candidates for the position of Creative Director - Consumer Products to be located in our Los Angeles, California office.

Position Summary:

Responsible for creating the visual design and style for assigned Discovery Consumer Product (DCP) brands, including Discovery, Science, Animal Planet and TLC. Direct North American based licensees to create compelling consumer products and packaging that reflect the distinct personality of every DCP brand; including our Male, Female, Kids, Animal Planet and Program franchise brands. Design and concepts are required for all product categories including, hard goods, soft goods, publishing and games; and Creative Director oversees review and approval of products submitted from licensees.


1. Based on the brand strategy set by Senior Management, direct the creation of style guides, channel distribution specific and seasonal supplements for global KIDS brands across all consumer touch points. Creative Director for International will be responsible for contributing regional sensitivities and stylistic tastes which need to be considered in any global offering.
2. Direct the creation of style guides, channel distribution specific and seasonal supplements for designated brands and program franchises across all consumer touch points; ie. TLC, Diesel Brothers, Shark Week, etc.
3. Partner with Creative Director EMEA & APAC on all possible style guides and products that may need to work within North America and flag regional sensitivities and stylistic tastes.
4. Work closely with the Sr Director, Brand Strategy & Retail Marketing to translate brand promise into style guides and compelling retail spaces that meet Discovery’s expectations and drive revenue.
5. Partner with North & South American Sales teams to drive product development strategies across all consumer touch points that drive long term financial targets and work within the parameters of Discovery’s brand promise.
6. Direct the creative development process in multiple categories.
7. Liaise with Network colleagues to understand channel brand direction and identify domestic quick-wins for creating fast-to market products and US-specific promotions.
8. Secure strong internal and external creative and production resources. Manage relationships and projects with strong planning and negotiation skills to ensure projects are delivered on budget and on schedule.
9. Set and maintain creative and production standards for department. Develop processes and procedures as needed to ensure efficient communication and cost effective creative development.
10. Design POP materials, branded retail areas, marketing materials, catalogues, sales presentations, tradeshow materials and premiums to support the global and North American sales teams.
11. Review and approve via MediaBox approval system, all North American products or manage agents who do so.

Job Requirements

* Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
* Eight to ten years total professional design experience with an understanding of and experience with design for consumer products and packaging. Five years licensing and/or entertainment industry experience.
* Excellent creative development skills with a history that includes the invention of brand design language, as well as line extensions and brand evolution.
* Stylistically flexible.
* Ability to consistently generate and execute new ideas.
* Ability to direct the design of others (both internal staff, and external licensees, partners and creative agencies).
* Knowledge of product design, production and manufacturing processes for a wide variety of product categories, including apparel, toys, home, tech and electronics.
* Proven track record that includes: people and vendor management, timeline management, product & content development, negotiating skills and budget management.
* Strong interpersonal communication skills to manage both internal and external resources and work in a collaborative cross-functional team.
* Expert knowledge of design software including Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign
* Able to travel domestically and internationally.
* Must have the legal right to work in the United States
