Manchester United’s Merchandising and Licensing Revenue Triples

Manchester United’s retail, merchandising, apparel and product licensing revenue more than tripled to £97.3 million in the year ended June 30 as the soccer club continued to benefit from taking control of the category from Nike, the club said in an SEC filing. Nike handled the licensing for ManU until 2015. The club has a 10-year agreement with Adidas that began Aug. 1, 2015 that includes sponsorship as well as dual-branding licensing rights.

The agreement also retains for ManU licensing rights for soccer schools and team stores (both physical and e-commerce), all of which were previously under Nike. “In the future, we plan to invest to expand our portfolio of product licensees to enhance the range of product offerings available to our followers,” Manchester United said in the SEC filing. “Additionally, we may also seek to refine how we segment the different elements of this business.”

Manchester made the disclosures as part of the Glazer family’s proposed sale of 4.3 million shares for £56.85 million. The late American businessman Malcolm Glazer purchased Manchester United in 2005 in forming Red Football LLC. His family continues to own 3.7 million shares.
