Funko Prepping Displays in TRU, B&N

Funko will have an in-store destination display at Toys R Us for its collectibles this fall and also is readying a shop-in-shop for 250 Barnes and Noble locations, says the company’s Shawn Socoloff.

A Toys R Us spokesman confirmed plans for the display this fall and said it will be chainwide, with the size based on location and size of the store itself. A Barnes and Noble spokeswoman wasn’t available for comment.

The expanded distribution for Funko’s Pop vinyl figures, pen toppers, key chains, apparel and other licensed products came as the company acquired accessories supplier Loungefly.

The purchase of Chatsworth, CA-based Loungefly adds a broad line of wallets, backpacks, clutches, shoulder, cross-body and cosmetic bags, phone and tablet cases with licenses for Star Wars, Hello Kitty, My Little Pony, Peanuts and others. Terms of the acquisition weren’t disclosed, but Loungefly Founder Trevor Schultz will remain with the company.

At the same, Funko staked a large space at last month’s Licensing Expo to underscore its growing product line and ability to display them in themed collections, says Socoloff.

“A lot of people think of us as just being Pop product, but we are more of a lifestyle brand,” says Socoloff. “The booth was to show what we are capable of doing,” with themed multi-category vignettes, rather than just a wall of vinyl figures.

Funko has been on an acquisition spree of late. The company bought its European distributor Underground Toys earlier this year. And it purchased the Flophouse t-shirt company to expand into the apparel business. Flophouse was owned by Michael Becker, who founded Funko in 1998 and sold it to Funko CEO Brian Mariotti in 2005. Funko also recently hired former Van’s executive Greg Tung to head up its apparel business as it seeks to further expand that category.

“The velocity behind the Funko brand has been amazing and while it is always important that we have the big properties, it is equally important that we have the smaller ones because there is a segment of fans that appreciate and recognize what we do,” says Tung.
